Press Release
May 19 marks a
day with terrible memories for Americans of Pontian-Greek
descent. It marks the arrival of Kemal Ataturk (the founder
of modern Turkey) in the region and the beginning of the killing
and displacement of 700,000 to 1,500,000 Greeks.
The United Nations Human Rights Commission has recognized
this genocide as such in 1998 and several actions are underway
to ensure the basic human right of self-determination and
the right to identity, which can only exist with an accurate
historical record. This year, the Pontian Genocide Advocacy
Committee of the United States joins similar committees in
Germany, Australia, the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Greece
in order to raise awareness of this planned and executed genocide
policy of the Turkish government. The public, media representatives,
and government officials of the nations involved in raising
the awareness and the prevention of all and any genocide are
invited to join us on:
